About this event

There are a ton of myths and moral panic regarding the topic of video games (and some tabletop games). Many parents consider gaming, at best, a superfluous activity in their child’s free time. Others are concerned about their perceptions of harmful aspects of gaming. Join Take This’ clinical contributor Sarah Hays, PsyD, LMHC for this 1-hour workshop and 30-minute Q&A as we briefly debunk many of common myths about the harms of gaming and give parents some practical tools and tips for how to use games to engage with their families in a prosocial, connecting, and fun manner!

While this is a companion and supplementary workshop to the August 26, 2021 workshop PlayVS Parent Workshop - Video Game Effects: What Do They Really Do?, it may also be attended as a standalone workshop.

Speaker Bio: Sarah Hays, PsyD, LMHC - Dr. Hays (she/her) is a doctor of counseling psychology and a clinical contributor for Take This. She has served in this role since the summer of 2018, curating expert content, panels, presenting workshops, and organizing special projects like the State of the Gaming Industry white paper. Outside of her work with Take This, Dr. Hays serves as a therapist in private practice in the Seattle, WA area, specializing in Geek Therapy, ADHD, and LGBTQIA+ populations. She also serves as the Mentorship Lead for Queer Women of Esports. She's also a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts video game series.

About Take This: Founded in 2012, Take This was the first nonprofit to serve the mental health needs of the video game community. Our mission is to destigmatize mental health challenges and educate the gaming community about maximizing mental wellness. We do this in a variety of programs, including our groundbreaking AFK Room at conventions, our online streaming ambassador program, educational posts, mental health resources, research-based papers, and mental health trainings. UPDATE - Sept. 27, 2021: Due to an unexpected event conflict, our original speaker R. Boccamazzo, PsyD has been replaced with Sarah Hays, PsyD, LMHC for this workshop.
